The Ascot Royals

Saturday, June 18th - Burlington Hyundai Community Stage - 8:00pm

Maybe it’s the shared genes, or maybe it’s the sibling rivalry, but whatever the reason, bands featuring brothers have become a real staple in the music industry. From AC/DC to Kings of Leon, there’s just something special about the results achieved from fusing brothers with music. The Ascot Royals are the latest addition to this time-honored tradition.

When British export Ben Chauveau (keyboards) met Joey Vinegar (guitar) in Hamilton, ON in 2008, they had no idea they’d soon be forming a band, well, of brothers. Recruiting brother Jimmy Chauveau (vocals), university friend Jesse Gilroy (bass) and, newest member, Sam Stark (drums), The Ascot Royals family was complete.

The band headed into the studio for the first time in 2009 to capture their eclectic nature and the spirit of their energetic live shows on a debut EP. The self-titled release dropped in September of that year and was a hit with fans and critics alike.

Now, they’ve done it again. Working with Lorne Hounsell (Bedouin Soundclash, k-os, Olivia Newton John), The Ascot Royals recently went back into the studio to record their follow-up offering. The seven-track EP, released in February 2011, showcases the band’s signature fusion sound, which draws from an array of genres that span from rock to funk.
From success in studio to concert triumphs, The Ascot Royals have also had their fair share of memorable performances. They’ve played alongside some of Canada’s brightest stars, including Hollerado, Down With Webster, The Reason, Sweet Thing, USS and San Sebastian – and that’s all in the past year and a half.

But even with so much Canadian love, some British traces will always remain. Yes, perhaps most notably, the band’s chosen moniker is a play on the famous British racecourse, Royal Ascot. Just don’t expect to see The Ascot Royals donning any fancy dresses or swanky hats. Okay, except maybe at their always-popular Halloween show (hint hint).
